10. Don't Breathe
The home invasion sub genre has been on the decline of late, with studios giving what can be a chilling format some dire remake treatment in the form of When A Stranger Calls, Last House On The Left and Straw Dogs. There have been glimmers of hope - Them and Strangers deserve a watch - but the opportunity for something a little different has been begging for some time.
Don't Breathe is just what audiences needed. A slow-burning tale of thieving teens getting more than they bargained for when they break into the ramshackle house of a blinded Iraqi war vet. The film positions itself perfectly, with new director Fede Alvarez utilising his very human boogeyman - a career topping Stephen Lang - as a grizzly antagonist to a scared trio of hunters turned prey.
While blatant scares are low, Alvarez torments us by working within the confines of the film's home setting, throwing out grim twists along the way, one of which is particularly nasty and involves a turkey baster with one hell of a backstory. This is the film people should be watching on a cold night if they want a break from ghouls, ghosts and jump scares.
