15 Recent Horror Movies Destined To Become Halloween Essentials

7. Blair Witch

Curse Of Chucky
Lionsgate

If any horror franchise out there is due another scream out on screen, it has to be the one that kicked off with one of the highest grossing films of all time.

In safe hands being helmed by genre starlet Adam Wingard, this third movie in the series - Book Of Shadows is best forgotten - sees the brother of original unhappy camper, Heather Donahue, heading out into the Burkittsville woods with his pal and documentary maker love interest.

It's clearly a fool's errand, but unlike the DV cam-wielding heroes of the first movie, these guys are armed with high tech cameras, tablets and, in one of the film's scariest moments, a drone. This gives ample opportunities to scare us in some wicked and branch cracking ways.

While there is some decent backstory and witch lore included, the purpose of Blair Witch is to scare, and it achieves this to a degree that you feel like you're stuck in the woods as well. Come a shattering climax involving claustraphoibc tunnels under an oh so familiar house, you'll be well and truly spooked. Effective and essential viewing this time of year.
