8. Straw's "The World Is Not Enough"
https://youtu.be/PRrL3d4qrMo Remember Straw? No? Things could have been oh-so different for Straw had they been given the nod over Garbage. David Arnold accepted the invitation to return and set about composing his second 007 score and drafted in veteran Bond lyricist Don Black to help write what would ultimately become the theme song. Various big names were linked to the job including Robbie Williams, Texas lead singer Sharleen Spiteri and former Spice Girl Mel C. All were denied by Arnold at the time but it's clear bands and artists were encouraged to submit their work for the project. Shirley Manson possessed the right qualities and could have been a Bond girl in her own right - Moody, sexy and probably good with a weapon. And so it came to pass that Garbage secured their place in history with the finished song dodging a copyright infringement case along the way and going to number one in Iceland. Wow. Straw's version is very Radiohead-esque and surely would have made a commendable runner-up, even if it does sound like a grungy, generic homage to the world of James Bond. The band were only together for three years, during which time they released one album and pitched The World is not Enough for the Pierce Brosnan film of the same name. Presumably the song that broke the camel's back.
