9. Bono's "Goldeneye"
https://youtu.be/HnVMCDuV4T4 Having coveted him since For Your Eyes Only, Eon finally saw Pierce Brosnan turn out as James Bond in the post-Cold War story, Goldeneye. Brosnan's salary was rumoured to be a relatively small percentage of the film's budget which allowed producers to spend big on the theme tune. Armed with a fist full of cash they went after the Rolling Stones but when they declined attention turned to Tina Turner, with a song written by Bono and The Edge. Why didn't Bono sing it himself? The demo version clearly demonstrates his inability to hit the extremely high notes without sounding like a melting wicked witch of the west. Would have made an effective weapon against a rogue MI6 agent though. Overall the Bono demo isn't a bad job (come in it's Bono) but at best it's quirky. Bond themes aren't quirky. Bond themes are confident, Bond themes smoulder and fizz. At the box office Goldeneye did well and delivered plenty of Bond firsts including the first 007 film to use CGI and the first non-Fleming story to make the big screen. Sadly, Tina Turner's Goldeneye theme didn't become the first Bond song to top the singles charts, entering at number ten and dropping out ten weeks later.
