Lion is the sixth film featured on this list to be based on true events - and it's not the last one either. Adapted from Saroo Brierley's book, A Long Way Home, Lion brings Saroo's story to life. As a child, Saroo (Dev Patel) was separated from his family in India when he accidentally boarded a train travelling far away from his home. Now an adult living with his adoptive family in Australia, Saroo is determined to return to India to find those he lost so long ago.
Lion was nominated for a respectable 6 Academy Awards - although it didn't win in any of its nominated categories. However, Dev Patel did take home a BAFTA for best supporting actor for his moving performance.
Family and the importance of it in our lives is a universal theme. Saroo must balance his appreciation for his adoptive family with his burning desire to find his birth family. It's a poignant story - and one certain to get the tears flowing.
