10. The Lady In The Painting - IT (2017)

At its heart, this scene was no more than an IT'S BEHIND YOU jump scene, but one of the first appearances by It - in one of his alternate manifestations - but it was horribly effective.
This is the first time we see Stanley's fear - of a portrait in his rabbi father's office that has distinct Slender Man inspiration - when he's sent to return a book. He sees the creepy image, and makes the mistake of turning his back, which naturally means the painting falls to the floor of its own accord and when he replaces it, its gruesome star has disappeared.
It's a scene that's all about atmospherics - even in the relatively normal environment of an office - with the reveal of the haunting, twisted creature built up wonderfully effectively. And the scare is so much more than just a jump, it's the kind of chill that genuinely puts you on edge and disgusts you as well.
