15 Scariest Stephen King Movie Moments

9. The End - Carrie

Carrie Grave Scene
United Artists

The remake of Carrie might not have been particularly great, but part of that is down to how good Brian De Palma's 1976 adaptation was.

The end is very much the most memorable part - not least the iconic image of Sissy Spacek drenched in blood - with Carrie's vengeful murder of her mother offering a satisfying conclusion, even if she ends up burning her own house to the ground as well.

Naturally - this being a horror - it's not as it seems and we get to see Carrie rise again, when the sole survivor of her prom massacre, Sue, visits her grave. We should have all seen it coming really, but there was something about De Palma's soft-focus filter and the slow motion that made this feel safe. Which is why it's so effective when the bloody arm bursts out of the ground to burst hearts everywhere.
