10. 2D Animators Came Out Of Retirement For The Film - Mary Poppins Returns

Mary Poppins Returns' most memorable sequence sees Mary (Emily Blunt), Jack (Lin-Manuel Miranda) and the Banks children visiting a magical world that's painted on the side of the family's prized bowl.

The result is a glorious hybrid of live-action and traditional 2D animation, and the set-piece was so ambitious it required Disney to ask a number of their long-retired animators to come back for one last job.

Several of these animators were reportedly well into old age when they undertook the task, which required meticulous hand-drawn animation over contemporary digital scrawling.

With the near-death of 2D animation in Hollywood today, there are curiously few animators who possess the unique set of skills to deliver the much-loved hand-drawn Disney style, so the old-guard came to the rescue. Incredible.
