Typically in a movie like Venom where the principal actor is performing opposite a visual effects character to be added later, a script supervisor or stage hand will fill in and read the lines.

This of course allows the physical actor to know when to speak their lines and get a better sense of the scene.

Production on Venom went a little differently, though, and in an uncharacteristic move, Tom Hardy actually recorded his lines for the head-chomping symbiote first, which were then looped through to him in an earpiece during shooting.

Considering that the chemistry between Eddie Brock (Hardy) and Venom is unquestionably the strongest part of this deeply flawed movie, it's clearly a technique that paid off.
