15 Terrible Recent Movies Destined To Become Cult Classics

5. Red Lights

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 29% Why It Sucks: Here's a film that just can't live up to the fantastic ambition of its premise. What begins as a tale of a group of scientists attempting to debunk a renowned psychic (Robert De Niro) takes one sharp left-turn at the mid-way point, and then another at its climax, the latter of which was widely criticised as one plot twist too far. After a superb first act, Red Lights fell apart, and despite plenty of style and numerous fine performances, it was nothing but a crushing disappointment. Why It'll Become A Cult Classic: That said, the film's first 40 minutes or so are so gripping that, for many, that will be enough for them to be willing to go along with whatever the movie is going to throw at them. The unexpected character death at the mid-way point and the absurd revelation at the end are undeniably going to have their fans, in so much as writer-director Rodrigo Cortés didn't just follow a predictable, down-the-line execution, and deliberately went about subverting viewer expectations. It's exactly the sort of promising thriller that many will be willing to forgive for its later trespasses, because there are so many great elements in it.
