15 Terrible Recent Movies Destined To Become Cult Classics
6. Machete Kills
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 29% Why It Sucks: Much like Kick-Ass 2 and Piranha 3DD, it's the law of diminishing returns through and through that ultimately lets the Machete sequel down. It's pretty much more of the same, but lacks the sure-handedness of the original film, which boasted a surprisingly intelligent and hilarious immigration commentary, delivered by Robert De Niro's outrageous racist senator character. Returning director Robert Rodriguez hurls plenty of insanity at the screen, but decidedly less of it sticks this time. Why It'll Become A Cult Classic: That said, it has the makings of a movie that will fare much better with the Netflix crowd on a boozy Saturday night, what with its infinitely more absurd plot than the original, and its insanely talented cast (including Mel Gibson, Amber Heard, Demian Bichir, Charlie Sheen, Cuba Gooding Jr, Walton Goggins, Antonio Banderas, Vanessa Hudgens, Tom Savini and William Sadler). For all of the plot's issues, Mel Gibson is hilarious as the Darth Vader-esque villain, and the fake trailers for Machete Kills Again...In Space left many disappointed that, due to this film's poor box office, it'll never actually happen. This is a bad film with enough personality that it's easy to see why it will grow on people over the years and make for a fine double feature with the original.
