5. Tasteless 3D - The Walk

The Moment: The trailer for Robert Zemeckis' upcoming movie about Philippe Petit's 1974 wire-walk between New York's Twin Towers plays up the fact that it's going to be released in 3D (and IMAX 3D, don'cha know?), with in-your-face graphics making it feel like a Disneyland ride. Why It's Going To Suck: As visually impressive as some of the vertiginous shots (CGI-assisted, of course) look, the whole trailer invites a feeling of ick and tastelessness, making an exhilarating thrill-ride out of two incredibly sensitive former national monuments. Sure, the movie has nothing to do with 9/11 at all, but wouldn't a more sober, pared-down approach (like, say, the documentary Man on Wire) feel a little more appropriate and less tacky? Plus, even ignoring the fact that the Twin Towers no longer exist, the whole thing just looks and feels completely sterile and digital: there's not much of a sense of immersion at all. ...And The Rest Of The Movie?: It's sure to be divisive, especially if the next seven months of trailers continue to advertise the movie like a theme park ride. It could net Joseph Gordon-Levitt his first Oscar nomination, or it could be a tone-deaf failure. Time will tell.
