15 Things Horror Remakes Did Better Than The Original

12. Child's Play - The Protagonists

Nightmare On Elm Street Remake

Though not an outstanding film, Child's Play (1988) is a very entertaining and effective horror film which introduced audiences to Chucky, one of the Greatest slasher movie villains of all time.

After years of rumours, a remake was eventually released in 2019 and it's OK. It's not scary at all and it feels pretty disposable, but the script and cinematography are solid.

Better still, although the film is definitely weaker than the original and has a less compelling incarnation of Chucky as the villain it does do a better job with characterisation in terms of Andy Barclay (Gabriel Bateman), his mother Karen (Aubrey Plaza) and Detective Mike Norris (Brian Tyree Henry).

Henry makes for a very likeable and engaging Mike Norris while the Barclay characters, as well as the mother-son relationship, are well-written and developed as well.

The characters in the original film are OK but a bit under-developed. By making the mother a less conventional, more entertaining character and adding things like Andy being hearing-impaired and struggling with his mother relocating them and having a new boyfriend, this remake makes these characters far more interesting. The cast do a strong job as well.
