This fact cannot be escaped as you look into Miyazakis catalogue of movies. Nearly every film he has a hand in creating has some sort of Aeriel transport, whether it be a broom, an airship, or simply Peter Pan like powers of flight. Miyazaki loves the idea of movement through the air and flight and this is demonstrated with great vigour and delight through films such as Porco Rosso and Castle in the Sky which rely heavily on flight as a means of progressing the story line. It almost seems fitting that Miyazakis last film with the company was the historical drama, The Wind Rises, in which we follow a young Jiro Horikoshi growing up with his dream of designing and creating a plane of his own, eventually creating a plane for the Japanese Imperial Army. Miyazakis fascination with aircraft created some of the most beautiful and innovative designs ever featured in an animated movie, and helped him to pay homage to historical events and elevate his viewers to places that they would never have seen without the use of flight in film.
