The colourful cast of characters in Anchorman were clearly inspired by news teams from the '70s and are brilliantly parodied by the comedy actors that portray them.

There are little nods throughout the movie to people and stories that helped the writers and producers during pre-production of film. For example, the name of Ron Burgundy’s beloved dog, Baxter, comes from Ted Baxter, the dim-witted anchorman from The Mary Tyler Moore Show that aired during the 1970s.

Will Ferrell and Adam McKay clearly did a lot of research into newsreaders and journalists to help shape their film, however, the title of the movie comes from a far seedier industry.

The name of the movie is a play on a documentary called Porn Star: The Legend Of Ron Jeremy. Unfortunately.
