Woody, the character of Buzz Lightyear went through numerous changes during
pre-production of Toy Story.
Initially, Buzz was going to be significantly shorter than Woody and wear a red spacesuit. But after a few re-designs, Buzz was given the iconic look we are all familiar with today with the lime green and purple colours used as they are John Lasseter and his wife’s favourite colours.
The name of the Space Ranger toy also went through many changes, with names such as Tempest, after the Atari game of the same name, as well as Morph, Star Command and the rather unimaginative Lunar Larry being considered.
Eventually, the team settled on the name of Buzz Lightyear, with the first name being a tribute to the second man to walk on the moon, American astronaut, Buzz Aldrin.
