Staying on the subject of this year's BAFTAs, they did right with another film that got ignored by the Academy: Park Chan-Wook's Decision to Leave, which is easily one of the year's most acclaimed and essential foreign films. Still, for some strange reason, it didn't get nominated for Best Foreign Language Film. What gives?

Yes, this Oscar category is very well-known for snubs and injustice but this omission was still a shock as the film has done well elsewhere on the awards circuit, and some of the films the Academy nominated in its place were ones many viewers won't even have heard of.

Satisfyingly, the BAFTAs gave Decision to Leave the Best Foreign Film nod it deserved and also gave it a Best Director nomination. This was a surprise, but a deserved one, for it really is one of the best-directed pictures of the year. The stuff Chan-Wook does with the visuals here is simply extraordinary.

This was lovely to see; it's a shame the BAFTAs couldn't have nominated India's RRR, which is probably the most popular foreign film of 2022, as well, but there you go.
