15 Traumatising Moments From Children’s Movies That Scarred You For Life

3. Old Yeller's Death - Old Yeller

Oh look, it's Disney again and this time those loveable rogues are killing a dog with a shotgun. Okay, so it's not exactly as harsh as it sounds. You obviously don't see the dog getting shot and the dog did have rabies, but still, why not take him to the vet and then we wouldn't have to weep through this one? The scene is upsetting for a variety of reasons (beyond the obvious fact that it's a dog being killed with a shotgun). Old Yeller was the family's protector, having earlier defended the family against a rabid wolf. The shooting of Old Yeller represents Travis taking his first step towards manhood and learning responsibility too. Later in the film the all-grown-up Travis adopts a dog fathered by the late Old Yeller, naming him Young Yeller in honour. Returning to the Friends theme, there was a scene in the show where the characters sit around crying and watching Old Yeller with Phoebe admitting that she never saw the ending and calling it a "sick doggie snuff film". More parents should take a leaf out of Phoebe's mothers' playbook and not let their kids watch the end of the film for fear of traumatising them. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fjTJB-_Yd50
