15 Traumatising Moments From Children’s Movies That Scarred You For Life

13. The Grand Witch Unmasked - The Witches

The prosthetics really were of a hideous standard back in the 1980's and early 90's, weren't they? Pre-CGI, the only way to really achieve an effect was to go and do it, using whatever trick or technique you could to pull it off. When it came to character transformation, there were some truly horrendous (in a good way) effects and makeup on display. One of the most horrific was the reveal of the Grand High Witch in Nicolas Roeg's 1990 fantasy-comedy The Witches. In the scene, the normal looking Angelic Houston pulls off her wig and mask to show her real identity, a repulsive witch complete with elongated nose, warts and boney face. The effect is quite full-on for a kids film and brings a big scare amidst the laughter. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_1ddxJECccA
