15 Traumatising Moments From Children’s Movies That Scarred You For Life

12. The Wheelers - Return To Oz

Just about everything in Return To Oz is creepy, weird or scary. The original The Wizard Of Oz may have had its share of scary moments (like the flying monkeys), but Return completely ups the ante. Like a lot of 1980's kids films, it makes full use of puppets, robots and other animatronics. The film has a much darker tone than previous Oz adaptations and the puppetry reflects that. There is something very unsettling about the characters that Dorothy encounters on her journey and her 'friends' in the film are just as sinister as the villains at times. It was very unsettling for audiences at the time, who were expecting something akin to Victor Fleming's 1939 musical. None of the characters are more traumatising than The Wheelers, a group of evil humans who have wheels instead of hands and feet. They chase Dorothy through the Emerald City while making some truly terrifying noises. It was scenes such as this that polarised critics when the film was released, with many commenting that the film was simply too intense for children. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cGA4wW_2YLo
