15 Most Underrated 1980's Movies You Must See

9. At Close Range (1986)

At Close Range is another film on this list that performed poorly at the box office, probably because it was so different from anything else in cinemas at the time. Violent family dramas don't usually spell box-office success but it's disappointment is no reflection on the quality of the film itself. Based on a true story of a notorious gang that operated in the 1960's and '70s, the film also explores themes like loyalty, respect and the importance of family. There are some unsung performances by Sean Penn, brother Chris Penn, Christopher Walken and Mary Stuart Masterson. When you look at the cast it's hard to see why the film didn't make any great waves with critics or audiences but you can right some of the wrongs by watching it now. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_oEenejHcO4
