Where our introduction to the hero is dealt with in a upbeat, spirited style, the emergence of supervillain Ronan The Accuser comes as a hammer blow of pure darkness. It's a brilliant juxtapose. The whimsical nature of the good guys is in stark contrast to the ominous, brooding sense of menace that emanates from Lee Pace's portrayal of this Kree fanatic. He is woken from a pit of black liquid and goes through what looks like a ritual cleansing, his face smeared with vile inky tar on his ghostly blue skin, and eventually cloaked in his stunningly evil suit of armor. With colossal hammer in hand, the transformation is complete, and we're left with one of the most truly sinister villains to be seen in a Marvel film thus far.
