Why It's Doomed: Various attempts have been made to get a Barbie movie off the ground for over three decades, though these talks ramped up significantly when Amy Schumer was initially attached to play an "imperfect" Barbie thrust out into the real world.

Since then Schumer dropped out due to scheduling issues and has been replaced by Anne Hathaway, while on-the-rise director Alethea Jones will helm. There's no word on whether Juno writer Diablo Cody's earlier script will still be used, and honestly the project just sounds like a shambles that will struggle all the way to the finish line.

There's no way it's going to make that August release date as shooting hasn't even started yet, and even then, it'd take some real screenwriting finesse to update Barbie for 2017 in a way that's both subversive and respectful of the property. Seems doubtful, to be honest.
