15 Upcoming Movies That Might Be Surprisingly Awesome
11. Unfriended: Dark Web
Release Date: July 20
Why It Should Suck: The first Unfriended was a moderately entertaining horror romp with a neat gimmick - the entire movie takes place on a computer screen - but the marketing for this standalone sequel suggests it's going to just shamelessly rehash what worked the first time, albeit with heavily diminished returns.
Between the obnoxious teen characters and elaborate, vaguely comical death scenes, this looks like every workmanlike horror sequel you've ever seen.
Why It Might Be Awesome: Early reviews have in fact praised the movie more than not, generally lauding the gore, the surprisingly self-aware tone and creative number of ways it one-ups the original film.
It's not going to be a masterpiece, but if the positive reviews are on the money it just might be an efficient, imaginative horror that adequately justifies its own existence.
