2. Assassin's Creed
Release Date: December 21, 2016 (US), December 30, 2016 (UK) Why It Could Suck: Because it's a video game adaptation: what more needs to be said? The medium has proven extraordinarily difficult to adapt to the big screen well, in large part due to how differently games approach narrative compared to movies. Why It Might Be Surprisingly Awesome: Even though there are a ton of hurdles facing its potential success, this is certainly one of the most promising efforts yet, alongside Duncan Jones' upcoming Warcraft. Every gamer gut instinct wants to say that it's going to be another Prince of Persia, but with a cast including Michael Fassbender as the assassin protagonist and Marion Cotillard, Brendan Gleeson, Jeremy Irons and Michael K. Williams in supporting roles, it's hard to be that negative. Plus, it's being directed by Justin Kurzel, who just made a terrific version of Macbeth starring Fassbender. If nothing else, the film will look visually stunning, and hopefully interpret the series' dense mythology in an intriguing way.
