15 Upcoming Movies That Might Be Surprisingly Awesome
3. Trolls
Release Date: October 21, 2016 (UK), November 4, 2016 (US) Why It Could Suck: A movie based on the iconic troll dolls is only slightly less lazy than Angry Birds, but because Angry Birds actually has some sort of premise you could hang a movie around, Trolls will be a far more challenging proposition to bring to the screen. Directors Mike Mitchell (Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked, Shrek Forever After) and Walt Dohrn (Spongebob Squarepants) certainly have their work cut out for them, as the world-building required to make this work will be extraordinary. Oh, and as if that wasn't tough enough, it's a musical. Why It Might Be Surprisingly Awesome: It's going to be an uphill struggle, but maybe, just maybe Trolls will be self-aware enough to mock the incredulity of its own existence, and at least with Anna Kendrick and Justin Timberlake leading the cast, we know the voices should be pretty sharp. Songs could go either way, but hopefully it won't just be ear-assaultingly twee bubblegum pop all the way. Again, like Angry Birds, it needs to go the Lego Movie route, reinventing the popular product in a clever, subversive way that appeals to both modern audiences and old. It can happen, and the greatest evidence of its possibility is several members of the Spongebob crew being involved on the creative side.
