The mask featured on the poster of Smiley is pretty awesome, and so maybe this could actually be a great new slasher with an effective and terrifying villain! Any optimism instantly disappears as soon as you learn the plot, though. In this 2012 film, if a person goes on ChatRoulette and types "I did it for the lulz" three times, the Smiley Killer will appear and murder them. Yes, that is the actual setup. Although the design of the killer does remain cool throughout, how can you take a film seriously where half the movie is just characters spouting memes and talking about 4chan? By the time you get to a sequence of a character explaining what /b/ is, you'll be ready to turn this off. All of the interactions between the teens are awkward, the plot is dumb, the characters never contact the authorities when they should, and the ending must be seen to be believed; it's revealed that Smiley is actually just a prank conducted by Anonymous because they find all the deaths funny. They did it for the lulz! Get it, because anonymity on the Internet is dangerous! 4chan! Pedobear! Smiley is far and away the worst slasher of the 2000s, and nothing else even comes close.
