15 Worst Horror Films Of The 21st Century (So Far)

8. The Apparition

The Apparition

The Apparition is a horror film from Todd Lincoln, the guy who directed a V/H/S: Viral segment that was apparently so bad it got removed from the film. Yes, it was somehow worse than the rest of that already terrible film. So this should be fun. Four college students try to summon the spirit of a dead man, and it turns out that isn't the best idea. They unleash a ghost into the world, people start to die, and that's about all that happens. Is there a compelling backstory to the spirit? Is there a reason he's coming after these people? Not really. The film wants to be the next Paranormal Activity, but it is just incredibly formulaic and never adds up to anything. It's aiming for "less is more," but in this case, there is so little that there's nothing to latch on to or care about. You could also definitely make some sort of drinking game out of all the horror cliches in this film, inexplicably including the mandatory creepy girl with long dark hair. The Apparition runs in at less than 80 minutes without credits, and yet it overstays its welcome almost immediately. If you ever doubted the skill required to make something like Paranormal Activity, check out The Apparition to see how it could have been really messed up.
