5. Chain Letter

Chain Letter might hold the title of silliest premise for a horror movie in the 2000s, and that's saying a lot. The 2009 film follows a bunch of teenagers who die because they didn't forward a chain email to five people. Seriously. In the opening act, the one guy who didn't forward the email is immediately kidnapped and murdered using chains. Oh, isn't that clever? It's about a chain letter, and they're using chains to kill people! Woah! The fact that the word "chain" means two things is probably the only reason this film even exists. We later find out this is all a massive conspiracy involving an anti-technology cult, and the main killer is a soldier who was tortured because he had a government cell phone, so apparently he hates anything electronic now. Wait, wouldn't the people who forward the chain letter be more into technology than those who don't forward it? Why kidnap the people who don't engage in the emailing? Why target random teenagers as opposed to people who work in the tech industry or something? Who the hell knows? Certainly not the film's writers, who were too busy giggling over their clever idea of using chains to murder people in a movie called Chain Letter.
