5. January 2004
Number Of Movies Released: 10 Rotten Tomatoes Average: 38% Number of Movies Receiving Lower Than 40%: 8 January 2004 kicked off one of the worst years in recent cinema history. Throughout the entire year, according to the Rotten Tomatoes graph, the highest rated month of 2004 was June with 54%. Overall, the year had 10 truly terrible months and January was one of the worst. This was the month that gave us such "gems" as Torque, Chasing Liberty, My Baby's Daddy, and You Got Served. This was also the month that gave us The Butterfly Effect, which starred Ashton Kutcher and received mostly negative reviews from critics. Audiences, however, seem to differ greatly with the critics as the movie has an 81% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 7.7 rating on IMDB. In fact, The Butterfly Effect is actually one of the highest rated movies of Ashton Kutcher's career. The sole movie of January 2004 that was well-regarded by critics was the animated movie Teacher's Pet, which has since bombed in the box office and has largely been forgotten about.
