15 Worst Movie Moments Of 2016
The best of the worst.
2016 was ultimately a bit of a mixed bag for cinema and Hollywood; movies that had been anticipated for years fell flat on their faces – hey there, Independence Day: Resurgence – and even fail safe movies like Star Trek Beyond and Alice Through The Looking Glass failed to turn much of a profit.
Blockbusters in 2016 also found themselves loaded with messy storytelling and jarring tonal problems, with nearly all of them suffering from badly structured third acts. This lead to some decent movies containing pretty bad sequences, which in some cases became the most talked about moments from them.
Here we’ll take a look at some of the worst movie moments of 2016, the bits that either spoiled an otherwise decent flick or underlined how bad they were. Most of these problems were avoidable, so hopefully Hollywood will learn a few lessons from these movies going forward; they probably won’t though, but it’s nice to dream.
15. The Stay Puft Balloon - Ghostbusters
One of the key reasons Ghostbusters fans were unhappy with the reboot is that the new film would ignore the original films, and create its own canon. It sounded like an extreme approach, but it was intended to let the filmmakers work free of continuity.
That didn’t stop them trying to shoehorn in a bunch of out of place cameos and easter eggs, and the third act really overdoses on Ghostbusters nostalgia. It takes one step too far when the team encounter some evil balloons, with one being in the shape of the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man.
It’s a dumb, distracting scene that only serves to show how great the original is, and the reboot would have been better off not reminding viewers of Stay Puft at all; especially with his lame replacement about to arrive.
