15 Worst Movie Performances Of 2019
7. Matthew McConaughey - Serenity
It's been a rough couple of years for Matthew McConaughey. Before 2020's The Gentlemen, his last five movies stretching back to The Dark Tower in 2017 add up to an average of just 45% on the Tomatometer (a score that is almost heroically dragged up by Between Two Ferns' 74%).
Through all of this, the low point for the Dallas Buyers Club actor is Serenity, and while no one involved exactly covered themselves in glory here, McConaughey's performance was at the bottom of the pile. The movie's tone is a complete mess, with the actor's portrayal of Baker Dill going a long way toward this.
Though he made his rise to the top through incredibly deep, character driven performances, his attempt to do something similar here just doesn't fit. In a movie as bizarre as Serenity, with a twist so, for lack of a better word, awful, there shouldn't be any place to take anything too seriously.
This is McConaughey's downfall. Had he read the room and approached the role with perhaps a little more humour, reminiscent of his role in the Wolf of Wall Street, his performance may have fit the bill at least a little better.
