9. The Cheap Happy Ending - Magic In The Moonlight

The Scene: After illusionist Stanley (Colin Firth) finally uncovers the truth, that apparent clairvoyant Sophie (Emma Stone) is indeed a faker, he proposes to her. She rejects him and instead plans to marry Brice (Hamish Linklater). However, in the final minute of the movie, as Stanley sits alone, pondering on his existence, Sophie arrives out of nowhere. The two embrace and kiss, as the movie fades to black. Why It Sucked: Quite possibly the laziest ending to any Woody Allen film to date, Magic in the Moonlight seemed to be going on the right course: the two budding lovers go their separate ways in what's a bittersweet yet suitable finale. Sadly, though, without much of an explanation at all, Allen tacks on a needless happy ending instead, so sudden and abrupt that it almost feels studio-mandated. Granted, the film was already pretty disappointing, but this just hit the nail on the head. Allen's films usually exude overarching cynicism to the last drop, but this ending is the complete opposite.
