11. Joe's Newborn Son Dies...And Gets Cut Out Of The Womb
As if the Queen's death wasn't bad enough, that's not the end of the matter. Joe collects her barely still-breathing body and attempts to salvage his child. He implores one of his men, a makeshift surgeon who uses a trumpet as a stethoscope, to cut open the Queen's belly and retrieve the child. He does just that, with the baby's feet being briefly visible, but it's clear that the child is dead, and so is then promptly flung on the floor like a bad piece of meat. Joe is then told that it would've been a healthy son with another month in utero, somewhat humanising the man even though he's still utterly despicable. That the movie could get away with something so grim and potentially tasteless is a huge testament to the world-building Miller has gone here: in a world so desolate and ravaged, it's completely believable that people would act this way.
Stay at home dad who spends as much time teaching his kids the merits of Martin Scorsese as possible (against the missus' wishes).
