16 Actors Who Starred In More Than One Comic Book Movie Series

2. Doug Jones - Hellboy/Fantastic Four: Rise Of The Silver Surfer/Batman Returns

Arguably the least well-known of all comic book actors - at least in terms of his own face - Doug Jones has built a career on his striking physical appearance, which has translated well to immediately affecting character designs, and meant that he has joined the ranks of the few actors who have appeared in three separate comic book universes. Starting with Batman Returns, in which he played the Thin Clown in Penguin's ensemble of circus freak side-kicks, Jones has appeared in three legitimate comic book tent-poles (two much more successful than the other), as well as in Mystery Men, a very loose adaptation of Bob Burden's Flaming Carrot Comics. After Batman Returns, Jones of course played Abe Sapien in Hellboy - arguably his most recognised role - and in its sequel (and presumably in the announced threequel), and was one of the few redeeming elements in the Fantastic Four feature, in which he portrayed the Surfer, though the vocal work went to Laurence Fisburne. His appropriateness for such roles is obvious: he worked as a contortionist and that experience has added an exotic elegance to how he moves that translates well to creepy or fantastical creatures.
