16 Biggest Oscar Upsets Of The 21st Century
5. Best Supporting Actor - Christopher Plummer, Beginners
The Rightful Winner: Jonah Hill, Moneyball
Christopher Plummer is a prolific actor with decades of work behind him and always puts in sterling performances. Jonah Hill is an often type-cast funny fat guy who can usually be found on screen getting high with Seth Rogan. This being said, Hill deserved the 2012 Best Supporting Oscar much more than Plummer.
Moneyball introduced the world to the importance statistics have in sporting success. If you haven't seen it, it's a lot more interesting than it sounds. It also proved to movie-goers than Jonah Hill has some serious potential as a dramatic actor, enough so that he actually got nominated for a freaking Oscar. He's come a long way since Superbad.
The craziest thing is, he really should have won for his turn as Peter Brand, the man who successfully proved that turning baseball into a glorified spreadsheet can really improve a team's success. Of course, Hill's endearing comedy chops are tapped into for the role, but if anything this shows that he has a solid range, something he went on to further prove in Scorcese's Wolf Of Wall Street.
While there's plenty of time for Jonah Hill to realise his Oscar dreams, it will always be a let down that he wasn't properly acknowledged for his great work in Moneyball.
