16 Crazy Facts You Just Have To Accept To Enjoy The Matrix Trilogy

3. Forced Jesus Allegory (Revolutions)

From the first Matrix movie, the Christ parallels with Neo are pretty apparent (what with him dying, being reborn and acting as a saviour), though for the most part they're subdued enough not to be intrusive. This changes completely during a pivotal scene in Revolutions, when Neo sacrifices himself by allowing Smith to assimilate him, which then grants the Machines the ability to destroy Smith. However, in the flash that Smith is destroyed, there's some incredibly blatant, unmistakable Christian imagery: for starters, Neo's arms are outstretched, just like Jesus on the cross, and a small white cross of light also appears on Neo's chest, again emphasising that none of this is conjecture: it's all clearly intended, and plain as day. Though it's hardly a make-or-break element of the franchise, it is rather on-the-nose and intrusive in arguably the series' most pivotal moment, and frankly, it just wasn't necessary. It doesn't add much to the film, and its core purpose appears to be to give a University professor somewhere something to write about.
