Ask any established Spider-Man fan what the one major problem with Sam Raimi's excellent take on Spidey was and they'll probably mention organic web. It was an idea initially brought in by James Cameron, despite it flying in the face of the character's comic book origins.

Raimi liked Cameron's idea so much that he kept the idea, but he seems to have realised it might cause issues with fans as he built in a contingency. An early sizzle reel actually reveals that Peter did build non-organic web-shooters, possibly in case test audiences rejected the organic web out of hand.

It seems they didn't and the footage was never seen again.

Why It Was Cut

The studio ultimately agreed with Cameron and Raimi and the organic web stayed in the film. And possibly to hide the fact that they weren't actually confident in it, they stopped it being released to the wide world as a DVD extra too.
