16 Horror Films Worth Getting Excited About In 2016
1. The Witch
Nobody was really anticipating The Witch when it premiered at Sundance this year, but it quickly generated massive amounts of buzz as being one of the scariest films in recent memory. General audiences are finally going to get a chance to see it this February, and it's looking a lot like 2016's version of The Babadook.
The Witch follows a family in the 17th century who begin to experience strange forces of black magic and witchcraft. Their baby vanishes and their crops start to fail, and as a result they all begin to turn on one another.
The trailer is absolutely haunting, combining music with chilling imagery to create something geniunely unnerving without even revealing much of the plot. That's so great to see in an age when horror trailers give away practically every good scare.
The cinematography also looks stunning, and it's one of those trailers you're on board with right from the opening shot just because of how beautiful the imagery is. Too rarely can you describe a modern horror film as visually interesting.
It's unique in that we haven't seen a whole lot of 17th century horror flicks, it's got great buzz, and although it's by a first time director, this could easily wind up being the best horror film of 2016.
