16 Horror Films Worth Getting Excited About In 2016
10. The Neon Demon
Based on the early promotional images and the talent involved, The Neon Demon will likely be one of the most beautiful movies ever made about a series of horrifying murders. Directed by Nicolas Winding Refn (Drive, Only God Forgives), this new film is described as "a horror film about viscous beauty."
It stars Elle Fanning as an aspiring model who moves to LA, only to find herself surrounded by women who would kill for her youth and beauty. Presumably, that use of "kill" is quite literal. Also starring are Christina Hendricks and Keanu Reeves.
The story is loosely inspired by the real case of Countess Elizabeth Báthory de Ecsed, one of the most infamous female serial killers of all time who tortured and murdered hundreds of people during the 16th century.
Basically, expect Nicolas Winding Refn's signature style of neon lights and synth music, except applied to a film where throats are being slit and human flesh consumed. In other words, imagine the Christina Hendricks scene from Drive but for 90 minutes.
Just the idea of a director as high profile as Refn jumping into horror is exciting, and it's one of the few upcoming movies in this genre that will receive attention from non-horror fans as well. Let's just hope it's more like Drive and less like Only God Forgives.
