The franchise was clearly made by film fans, as the references to classic blockbusters are numerous.

First off, there are at least two references to Indiana Jones: in the first film, Barbossa forcing Elizabeth to dress up for dinner recalls Belloqq doing the same to Marion in Raiders Of The Lost Ark. In both cases, the damsel captive also threatens her captor with a butter knife - that can't be an accident.

And then there's also a nod to the moment in Temple Of Doom when Indy attempts to go for his gun, only to find it's not in its holster - the sheepish grin is flashes is almost identical.

There's also a reference to Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome in At World's End, when Elizabeth is forced to surrender her weapons before entering Captain Feng's base, revealing her to be carrying a comically large arsenal, just as Max was at the gate to Bartertown.

Meanwhile , for something even more classic, the six-way parlay in the same film borrows musical cues and closeup shots of eyes from Once Upon A Time In The West.

And of course, there's a big jar of dirt in At World's End, the symbolism of which is particularly hard not to associate with Waterworld, whether it was intentional or not.
