17 WTF Moments From Star Wars: The Force Awakens

6. All The Plot Elements Copied From Previous Movies

A massively divisive aspect of The Force Awakens is just how much it cribs from previous films in the franchise, especially A New Hope, to the point that it often feels like a remake of the film. Here's just a few aspects that make it feel a little too familiar: there's a new Death Star-esque base, a new Moff Tarkin-like character (Domhnall Gleeson's General Hux), Kylo Ren is the new Vader, there's another grotesque Emperor-type character (Snoke), BB-8 carrying a map is pretty much a facsimile of R2's job in A New Hope, Maz Katana's castle is very much like the Cantina, the Starkiller Base has one fatal flaw much like the Death Star, and also has a trench that X-Wings can fly into. This debate raises one fascinating question: where is the line between homage and lazy rip-off drawn? Considering that J.J. Abrams' Star Trek Into Darkness was lambasted by some for recycling too many plot threads from Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, it seems that he's pulled the same trick again, much to the division of the fanbase.
