18 Crucial Questions For 2015's Most Anticipated Movies

2. Is The Revenant 2015's Best Picture?

Release Date: December 25th With all this talk about the year's biggest blockbusters, it's crucial not to forget more modestly-budgeted movies that are nevertheless going to be massively talked about over the next 12 months. One such film is The Revenant, written and directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu (Amores perros, 21 Grams, Babel, Biutiful, Birdman), adapted from Michael Punke's 2003 novel. Taking place in the 19th century, a fur trapper named Hugh Glass (DiCaprio) ends up attacked by a bear and robbed by his colleagues (Tom Hardy, Will Poulter and Domhnall Gleeson), setting him on a path for vengeance. If not the most original-sounding premise ever, it at least has a ton of prestige potential: an Academy-friendly director, the perennially Oscar-snubbed DiCaprio, an awards-tailored release date and an excellent supporting cast. Verdict: With so many of next year's Best Picture prospects still in early production stages, it would be insane to call the race this early, but short of The Revenant proving majorly disappointing, expect it to be a serious contender and even the possible Best Picture winner in 2016.
