The Film

The record-breaking, hugely important Black Panther stand-alone will go down as one of the best films of 2018 (and one of the most lucrative for all involved) and it deserves every accolade. It's not at the very top rung of Marvel's ladder, but it's a wonderful achievement in character-writing, world-building and drama.

It has spectacle, great effects sequences and great performances - particularly from Michael B Jordan as Erik Killmonger - and even without the Phase 1 heroes around, it feels like Phase 4 will be in good hands.

The Moment

Killmonger is right up there with the best villains in the MCU and it's mostly thanks to his personal investment in the story - and how much we see of his own story. And when he finally gets his way and ascends to the Wakandan throne, we get his - and the film's best moment.

Erik visits the ancestral plane, meeting his father in a vision of their old apartment and Ryan Coogler captures something deeply personal and important in far wider terms in the process. It's nuanced, emotionally charged and entirely compelling - more so than any of the flashier, effects-heavy set-pieces, by some distance.
