13. The Shining Connection
The end scene of Blade Runner’s theatrical cut in which Deckard
and replicant Rachael drive off into the sunset borrowed unused footage from
Stanley Kubrick’s classic horror The Shining that the director had left over
from shooting its title sequence.
Kubrick was a big fan of Ridley Scott’s Alien and was happy to donate footage to Blade Runner on the proviso that he didn’t use any footage already featured in The Shining. Which is a shame ‘cos a couple of creepy identical twins and a random furry really would’ve added an extra element to Blade Runner.
That’s not the only link the two films share either. Joe Turkel – the actor that plays Dr Eldon Tyrell – also played Lloyd, the ghostly bartender that suddenly appears in the Overlook Hotel’s bar and serves the increasingly manic Jack Torrance bourbon on the rocks.
