13. Creating The Laser POV Shot

Terminator 2 has some of the most awe-inspiring special effects in movie history. Despite the fact the animatronics were praised for the original film, some of the effects have aged badly (especially when The Terminator performs surgery on his eye).

But there are some visual effects that are so good, viewers don't even notice them. There's a great shot where the Terminator first spots Sarah Connor and aligns his gun's laser with her forehead. We see the cyborg from Sarah's POV, with the laser flickering in the centre of the shot. This moment seems pretty simple but was incredibly difficult to accomplish.

Because sci-fi was hugely popular during the 1980s, every futuristic film seemed to have lasers. This was a problem because lasers barely existed during that era! The technology was around but it was so basic, there was no way a firearm could display a laser as is depicted in this scene.

To achieve this shot, Arnie had to hide a battery pack under his sleeve. Although Arnie looks very menacing in this scene, he's just trying his best to make sure the battery doesn't fall out of his jacket.
