18 Most Heartbreaking Moments In The MCU (So Far)

5. "I Had A Date"

The most tear-jerking of the romantic scenes in the MCU, the climax of Captain America: The First Avenger is gruelling to watch when you've got a beating heart and, well, feelings.

Even knowing it's a one-way trip, that he expects to die as he crashes the weapon-loaded HYDRA craft into the ocean, Steve Rogers gets one last conversation with his love, Peggy Carter. He plans for a date that'll never happen, saying he'll meet her at the Stork Club in two weeks, with Peggy tearfully playing along, telling him not to be late.

As he's about to crash, he asks Peggy for a raincheck on his date, and they lose contact. Bad enough that their conversation ends on such an abrupt and tragic note, but what's worse is what comes after.

After waking, Steve finds himself in New York in 2012, with Fury trying to calm him down. Even with all that he's seeing and even as he processes the passage of time, all he can say, the last line in the film, is:

"I had a date."

A date, and a dance, and a life, that he would never be able to have.
