Having been Peter Quill's father figure, even if not a perfect one, Yondu was an important part of the hero's life.

It becomes more apparent just how invested Yondu was in Quill's life when it's revealed that he was meant to deliver Quill to his father back when he'd kidnapped him from Earth. Knowing what Ego had done to his other children, however, Yondu instead hid the human child on his own ship, raising him as one of his Ravagers.

Even if reluctant to show it at first, Yondu shows just how much he cares for Quill when he helps rescue him from Ego once again, with Quill claiming he looked like Mary Poppins, who Yondu took for someone "cool". It's later, however, when Ego's planet explodes, that Yondu shows the full extent of his fatherly love, apologising for not being the best dad, telling Peter he was lucky to have him as a son, then sacrificing his own life so that Quill can survive the transit through space to safety.

The subsequent funeral scene is one of a beautiful and emotional sequence, honouring one of the film's most memorable and beloved characters.
