18 Most Heartbreaking Moments In The MCU (So Far)

2. "He Killed My Mom"

Avengers Infinity War Tony Stark
Marvel Studios

The moment Tony Stark discovers that Bucky Barnes killed his mother is simultaneously the best and worst part of Civil War.

Set up from the very beginning of the film, Tony's loss is clearly haunting him even decades later, testing his BARF technology by changing what he said to his parents the last time he ever saw them, something that in reality was presumably less kind than how he re-imagined it.

The moment the audience realises just how bad things are is the moment when Tony says "I know that road" as Zemo shows them footage of the events of December 16, 1991. Having to watch Tony experience his father, and especially his mother's death, in a whole new light, forced to see his mother suffer a horrible, slow death after watching her own husband murdered, is gut-wrenching.

More so when Tony's consequent, rage-fuelled attack on Barnes is interrupted by Steve's insistence on Bucky's innocence, to which Tony responds, "I don't care. He killed my mother." It shows just how far over the edge he's been pushed, for Marvel's first and one of its greatest heroes, to want to murder an innocent man, and fight his friends and allies to do it.
