4. Guardians Of The Galaxy Becomes The 2nd Highest-Grossing Movie Of 2014 Worldwide
In the months leading up to its release, there was much discussion online about whether Guardians of the Galaxy would be Marvel Studios' first box office flop in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. After all, it's based on niche source material, lacks the iconic stature of, say, Captain America, Iron Man or Thor, and with characters including a giant tree monster and talking raccoon, is just really damn weird. Still, the movie scored $772.4 million at the box office, narrowly giving it the #2 spot at the worldwide box office behind Michael Bay's commercial juggernaut, Transformers: Age of Extinction. It is, of course, a victory for an imaginative filmmaking vision, and proof that Marvel can pretty much sell anything to their fans by this point.
